Hi, I’m Moss, the person not the plant, and I’m a Pagan, a Witch, and a Cult Survivor. You might know me from my videos on Instagram and TikTok, where I try my best to be funny with varying results. I’m also an experienced public speaker and published writer, and available to book for events through the contact page.

I found the path of Paganism after being raised in a deeply homophobic doomsday cult. This journey affects all aspects of my practice and is something I regularly speak about. I also wrote my book about it.

As part of my personal practice, I draw on the stories of my family home and birthplace – the Harz Mountains of Germany – as well as my Welsh identity. As a Welsh language speaker based in North Wales I have a deep connection to this magical landscape and the many stories it safeguards.

My queer identity is also important to all that I do, being a core part of who I am. Being raised in a homophobic cult, I know all too well the harm intolerance and hatred can cause. The importance of queer representation is an important theme in all my work, informed by this personal experience.

On a no less important note, I’m also told I look a bit like Buzz Lightyear, so I’ve got that going for me too.

Mentored by a High Priestess

I was mentored on my journey by the wonderful Mhara Starling, author of Welsh Witchcraft and an important voice in Celtic Paganism. Alongside Mhara I am one of the founding members of the Red Serpent tradition of Witchcraft. This tradition sees Mhara Starling as its High Priestess. I’m also very honoured that Mhara wrote the foreword to my book.

Not a Solitary Practice

Moss Matthey practices alongside his partner, Brett Hollyhead, and has switched to the third person because he’s silly like that. Brett is a practicing Welsh Marches Witch, an accomplished public speaker and published author. Together they strive to empower the queer community in Witchcraft and Paganism, as they themselves have been empowered by it. They also seek to challenge the restrictive ideologies that keep so many people repressed and downtrodden.
